GAU Call for Nominations
Interested in joining a dedicated team of teachers, researchers, scientists, and educators to continue fighting for the fair treatment of GAs? GAU is currently seeking members who are interested in filling executive positions for the 2017-2018 academic year.
Listed below are the open positions, followed by a brief description of their role (from our bylaws). We also have nine Senate positions open for those interested in becoming more active but not wanting to take on a leadership role.
Please express your interest to any position to nealfschr@gmail.com by 6pm on Tuesday, February 14, 2017. Members of our current executive team will be available during our Solidarity Social on February 15, 2017 and will be happy to give you details on what these positions entail.
The elections will close by the April General Member Meeting. Officers shall begin their terms on September 1, 2017.
President: The Co-Presidents shall call and preside at all meetings of the Executive Committee and Membership. They shall appoint the Standing Committee Chairs and the Chief Steward, subject to the approval of the Executive Committee. They shall be ex-officio members of all committees, sign all necessary documents and papers and represent the Chapter internally and externally. They are members of the UFF President’s Council. The Co-Presidents shall report to the Membership annually on the activities of the Chapter. The Co-Presidents supervise the work of any employees of the Chapter and the chapter elections. Significant correspondence and documents shall be deposited in the Chapter records at the end of the Co-Presidents’ term of office
Secretary: The Secretary shall maintain the records of the Chapter, shall record the minutes of all Membership, Executive Committee Meetings or consultations with the University President or Provost. Copies of these minutes shall be distributed to all Executive Committee members
Treasurer: As chief financial officer of USF-GAU, the Treasurer shall exercise supervision over the receipt and disbursement of all moneys, properties, securities and other evidences of financial worth of the organization. S/He shall prepare an annual financial statement and shall prepare a proposed budget for approval at USF-GAU’s first Membership meeting of each Fall semester. S/He also shall submit the approved version of the budget to the UFF office in Tallahassee. The Treasurer shall report regularly to the Executive Committee and the Membership on the financial status of the Chapter. *The Treasurer will also prepare a yearly tax return (this line is a proposed addition to the bylaws, in order to reflect the requisite practice).
Grievance Chair: The Chair of the Grievance Committee shall direct the administration of grievances at USF, coordinate the activities of the Grievance Committee as described in the UFF Constitution and report regularly to the Chapter. S/He shall serve as the Chapter representative to the State UFF Contract Enforcement Committee
Bargaining Chair: The Chair of the Bargaining Committee shall represent the Chapter to the statewide Graduate Assistants United Bargaining Team unless otherwise determined by the Membership. The Bargaining Chair shall coordinate the activities of the Bargaining Committee as described in the UFF Constitution and report regularly to the Membership on the progress of bargaining
Organizing Chair: The Chair(s) of the Organizing Committee shall coordinate the activities of the Organizing Committee as described in the UFF Constitution and report regularly to the Membership. The Chair(s) shall serve as chapter representative(s) to the State UFF Membership Committee unless otherwise determined by the Chapter Membership. *The Organizing Chair(s) are also responsible for processing new membership. The Organizing Chair coordinates orientations, socials, and actions. (these lines are a proposed addition to the bylaws, in order to reflect the requisite practice).
Communications Chair: The Chair(s) of the Publications Committee shall coordinate the activities of the Publications Committee. *This includes sending notices about General Member Meetings, Socials and updating all social media accounts. (this line is a proposed addition to the bylaws, in order to reflect the practice).
Senators: Senators are voting members in the UFF statewide assembly. This assembly meets twice a year, on a Saturday and Sunday, in September and February. These positions are important given that our “parent” union is facing budget crisis and overhaul, and many of our important GAU line items are under threat of diminishing. UFF senators craft and vote on policy that holds for all of Florida’s local UFF chapters. We have 9 Senate Seats.
