The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) recently decided that Graduate Assistants are not considered employees of their university, despite the fact that we contribute a substantial portion of the academic and research labor on campus. Because of this new policy, graduate assistant unions at universities across their country might lose their right to collective bargaining and union representation.
This is patently unfair. GAs perform significant amounts of labor for the university, and deserve to be treated accordingly. The NRLB decision only applies to private universities, but if this precedent is allowed to stand unopposed, it could eventually be applied to public universities as well.
